My mother grew up in a shack on Lake Nipissing without electricity or running water. She left it for Toronto when she was only 17. For me, there's something nostalgic and wonderfully unnerving about the land and water. It's a place where there may be danger or delight. Some of the geological formations have been there for 175 million years, yet you don't know what might happen in the next moment. I feel a longing to go to there in a small boat - maybe a kayak or a canoe, like my grandfather did.
